How to Change ABU 5600C Reel Drag .

ABU 5600C  is a antique or vintage bait casting reel with red thumb bar. Before you get started. Get ready all your tools and ABU 5600C schematic. If you have no experience repairing reel or no confident best get some one with experience to change it for you. Here goes....

Firstly remove the handle, star drag. (please follow the ABU 5600C schematic) As you can see the above image I have a pack of  Drag ready. (NOTE: Choice of Drag are personal opinion or liking) Make sure you get the correct size drag. I have arrange all the parts when dismantling for easy re-assembly.
(NOTE: I used a large plastic container with cover  to house all parts dismantle this way you will not lost any parts)

Remove the Drag Press Plate and Drive Gear. The new blue drag pieces will be used. On the right the Drive Gear you can see the drag is black in color, feel like damp cardboard.

Above you can see Drag Press Plate and Drive Gear. Can also see the New blue Drag and the old Drag to be replace.

I used Autosol to polish the Drag Press Plate and Drive Gear.

Squeeze a small amount on a paper towel, and polish the Drag Press Plate, and also the Drive Gear (not shown)

Do not polish the teeth of the Drive Gear, Polish the center area as show in the above image. This area is act as the drag press.

Once the 2 surface are polish, it time to assemble the new drag and all the parts. I also clean all the access oil and grease on the above assembly. Notice the Drive Shaft, below sit a round disc, that the reason to polish the  Drive Gear center area. The Drive Gear will sit on the Black disc.
Remove the old drag and place the new drag on the Drive Gear.
Assemble back the drive gear and the drag press plate as show above image.

It should look like the above image when assemble correctly.

Grease the Gears using  a paint brush, see above image.

Apply the grease to the gear teeth, not to over grease the gears.

Here how it should look after grease. Next oil the other moving parts.

I used ReelX oil to oil the rest of the moving parts, used a cotton but to remove excess oil or grease.
Next assemble the Right side plate on the assembly. Make sure the orientations are correct when place the right side plate. (Please refer to the schematic while doing this are other parts like the bushing to be assemble)

Assembly the Star Drag, Handle and E Clip, (Be careful with the E Clip don't lose it) I used a tweezers to place the E clip in position.

Than I carefully used a flat head pliers to press down the e clip. Next assemble the rest of the parts like reel cage, spool and left side plate. You are done . Hope you can learn some thing from here. I will try to be more detail on other reel maintenance section.
